Meet Maverick Hatch

Maverick HatchThis is a year of firsts for me; a few months ago I had no idea what a “blog” was and now I’m a regular “blogger”, and the most important first for me, Canada Games. I’m twenty-two years old, JUST making the cut off for beach volleyball (thank you to whoever decided on 1987 and later). I was born in Comox, BC on Vancouver Island and have lived most of my life there taking a minor eight year stop on the east coast in Nova Scotia only to move back to BC in grade five.

Eleven years later I find myself on the beach, so much so that I no longer enjoy going to the beach just to hang out. If I’m not playing volleyball at the beach then I’m simply not at the beach. Keep in mind for the past month I have been training for six hours a day, six days a week, so as you can imagine when you get a day off you have no problem staying inside no matter how sunny it is!

My partner for Canada Games is Steve Marshall. Although this will be his first appearance at Canada Games as well, he has far more experience with the Team BC system having been apart of the program throughout his youth. I on the other hand, found my skill later in my career. We’re both loving the opportunity to represent our home province at the games and are taking nothing for granted. Every team there is going in with the same goal, gold, and we’re no different.

We have been in Toronto for the past month training with Team Canada and it’s been such an awesome opportunity. Surrounded by great coaches and great players, it makes training everything you could imagine and helps you improve so much faster. Steve and I head home in five days where we then travel to Kelowna, BC for the Center Of Gravity event followed by a few smaller events in BC and one in Alberta. The summer has already been jam packed with beach volleyball and as the games near we’re only getting more excited.
