A flag raising ceremony was held outside Grand Prairie City Hall for the official Canada Games flag in an event marking Grand Prairie’s participation in the cross Canada celebration in the lead up to the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Mayor Bill Given spoke about the importance of the Games and noted that Grande Prairie was the first community to include a cultural aspect when the event was hosted by the City in 1995. The creation of the Iskoteo festival paved the way for all Canada Winter Games to do so.
Grande Prairie is the second stop in a nation-wide celebration by communities who have previously hosted the Games. The flag will be flown outside City Hall for the next three days before making its way to Kamloops, BC on December 9.
