Nova Scotia leads the way in draw one of Women’s Curling at the 2011 Canada Winter Games

Halifax, NS – Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and British Columbia all came away with wins in the opening draw of the Women’s Curling at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax.

Nova Scotia scored two in the first, stole two in the second to take a four point lead early.  Saskatchewan countered with a point in the third and Nova Scotia came back with a single taking a 5-1 lead heading into the 4th end break.  Saskatchewan scored two in the 5th.  In the 6th, Emily Dwyer skip of Nova Scotia attempted a split for four but had to settle for three to take a 8-3 lead heading into the 7th.  Saskatchewan scored a single in the 7th.  The final was a Nova Scotia win 8-4.

New Brunswick scored four points in the first three ends.  Manitoba got on the board in the 4th end with a single point after the Manitoba skip made a hit and stay for one. Manitoba stole a single point in the 5th, New Brunswick countered with a duce in the 6th.  The score after the 7th was 6-3 for New Brunswick.  In the 8th with hammer, on her last rock Cathlia Ward, NB skip was looking at 3 Manitoba rocks all lying within the 4 foot.  Cathlia made a double take out to score 2 and secure the win.  The final score was 8-3 for New Brunswick.

Ontario controlled the game against Newfoundland Labrador.  Ontario scored three points in the 1st end and then went on to score single points in the next two ends.  Newfoundland Labrador got on the board in 4th when skip Carolyn Suley removed a heavily guarded Ontario rock on the four foot with an angle raise takeout.  Ontario went on to score a single in the 5th, stole two in the 6th to take a 8-1 lead.  Newfoundland was only able to score a single in the 7th.  The final was a 8-2 Ontario over Newfoundland.

British Columbia scored single points in the first three ends of their opening game to take a 3-0 lead over the Northwest Territories (NWT).  NWT got on the board in 4th end with a single point.  British Columbia went on to score three more points in the next two ends to push their lead to 6-1.  The final score was British Columbia 6, Northwest Territories 2.

Draw 2 takes place on Sunday, February 13th at 2:30 pm;

Sheet A – Sasktachewan (0-1) vs British Columbia (1-0)

Sheet B – Quebec (0-0) vs Alberta (0-0)

Sheet C – Yukon (0-0) vs Prince Edward Island (0-0)

Sheet D – Nova Scotia (1-0) vs New Brunswick (1-0)
