Ontario defeats Alberta and finishes first in Pool B in women’s curling

Halifax, NS – Ontario and Alberta met in the final game of round robin at the Mayflower Curling Club.  After a couple of blanked ends, Ontario got on the board first with 2 points in the 3rd.  Alberta countered with a duce in the 4th end to tie the game 2-2.  The 5th end Ontario scored another 2 after an Alberta take out jammed on a rock in the back of the house.  The teams went on to exchange singles and the score after 8 was 5-3 Ontario.

Ontario and Alberta had to wait for the outcome of the Yukon – Quebec game to find out their final placement after round robin.  If Yukon won, there would be a 3 way tie for the first two spots in the pool, forcing a tie-breaker.  If Yukon was on the losing side Ontario and BC would finish in the 1-2 spots.

Quebec opened the game with 2 points, and lengthened their lead to 5-1 after the 5th.  Yukon then fought back after taking 1 point in the 6th, they stole a point in the 7th and 2 in the 8th to force the extra.  Without last rock, Yukon’s skip Sarah Koltun attempted a hit and roll to sit shot behind cover.  Her hit rolled too far leaving Quebec sitting 1 and the win.  The final was 6-5 for Quebec.

In the final game on the ice, Prince Edward Island defeated Newfoundland Labrador 7-5.
