Alberta Opens Canada Winter Games Tourney With Shutout Win

Alberta 4 – British Columbia 0

Dartmouth, N.S. – Katy Josephs (Cochrane, Alta.) contributed three points to help Alberta open the Canada Winter Games women’s hockey tournament Sunday at the  Dartmouth Sportsplex, with a 4-0 shutout win over British Columbia.

Josephs cracked the scoreboard just over seven seconds into the first, on an assist from Bryanne Panchuk (Calgary, Alta.), despite Alberta being down a player on the ice. Panchuk followed suit with a goal of her own a couple of minutes later to make it 2-0 going into the intermission.

Melissa Kueber (St. Albert, Alta.) added to the game sheet at 6:52 in the second to give Alberta a solid lead going into the final period. Samantha Sutherland (Cochrane, Alta.) sealed the deal at 14:30 in the third, with help from Josephs and Heather Kashman (Edmonton, Alta.).

The match-up between the two Western provinces was the first of six games Sunday.
