Manitoba 6 – New Brunswick 2
Halifax, N.S. – A small but boisterous crowd filtered into the Halifax Metro Centre to see Maritime team New Brunswick open the scoring in women’s hockey action Sunday, but five power play goals gave Manitoba the 6-2 win in the end.
There were cheers abound on each side, with New Brunswick family and fans breaking out the noise when Connor Garagan (Fredericton, N.B.) slipped it past the Manitoba goal line at 7:37 in the first, on passes from Janik Robichaud (Dieppe, N.B.) and Jenna Scott (Hanwell, N.B.).
But the remainder of the game belonged to Manitoba and its supporters, with Halli Kryzaniak taking advantage of the power play with a minute left in the first to tie it up at one-apiece. Natasha Kostenko (Fannystelle, Man.) and Jennifer More (Deloraine, Man.) traded goals and assists in the second, both with the man advantage, to give Manitoba a 3-1 confidence boost. Kristine Grenier (St. Leon, Man.) scored midway through to make it 4-1 going into the third.
Jessica Carswell (Winnipeg, Man.) scored her first and Grenier scored her second of the game to give Manitoba a 6-1 lead, but New Brunswick claimed the final goal of the game when Gabrielle Poirier (Dieppe, N.B.) pocketed an unassisted marker in the third for the final 6-2 score.
