Dartmouth, N.S. – Three different players scored in the first half of the game to secure Saskatchewan’s 3-0 shutout over Newfoundland and Labrador on the Dartmouth Sportsplex ice Sunday afternoon.
Forward Lauren Zary (Saskatoon, Sask.) gave Saskatchewan a great start at 16:36, getting her first goal of the Canada Winter Games on an assist from blueliner Hanna McGillivray (Weyburn, Sask.). The Prairie province kept up the momentum in the second, with Jessica Sibley (Luseland, Sask.) scoring four minutes into the period and Kennedy Ottenbreit-Daunheimer (Grayson, Sask.)making it 3-0 on a power play opportunity at 10:33, with helpers from Brooke Wilgosh (Regina, Sask.) and Taylor Woods (Wilcox, Sask.).
Newfoundland and Labrador battled hard throughout the third to put the puck in the net, but Saskatchewan fought back to hold the Atlantic province at bay, for a feisty period that resulted in six penalties. By the time the clock ran out, Saskatchewan had earned its first three points of the Games.
Saskatchewan’s next task will be Monday at 4 p.m. in Dartmouth, against an Ontario squad stacked with members of Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team. The game will be broadcast live on TSN2.
