In a shocker, Manitoba defeated the second seeded Quebec team 3-2 to advance to the gold medal final and will meet Ontario who beat British Columbia 3-1.
Tian-Terry Zhang was the star for Manitoba in their team match against favored Quebec. Zhang defeated Quebec’s top player, Mathieu Theriault, 3-1 in the first match of the team event. Quebec rebounded to tie the match 1-1 with Vincent Rousseau-Edmond’s 3-0 win over William Liu. Manitoba went up 2-1 after winning a nail biter 13-11 in the 5th doubles match. Quebec then leveled the match at two apiece when Theriault beat Alan Huang 3-0. In the 5th and final match, Zhang secured the upset for Manitoba in dramatic fashion by defeating Michael Siemaszko 3-2.
Ontario got out to a quick 2-0 start against British Columbia as Yen-Chun Lu beat Adrian Lee 3-0 and Zexuan Wang defeated Jeremy Lau 3-0. British Columbia did not go down without a fight and manage to defeat Ontario in doubles 3-2. Ontario’s James Pintea closed out Ontario’s victory with a 3-0 win over Adrian Lee.
The top seed Ontario and 4th seeded Manitoba will now meet in the gold medal final for the junior male team event on Wednesday evening.
