Quebec upset the top seeds Ontario 3-1 in the Junior Female team event advancing to the gold medal team match. The 4th seeded Quebec team got off to a slow start as Li Quan Ly lost to Jiawei Liu 3-1. Quebec bounced back with Annie Coulombe winning a close match against Shannon Zhang 3-2. The key to Quebec’s victory could very well have been the doubles match. Quebec fought off 2 match points against Ontario in doubles and won 13-11 in the 5th and deciding match. Quebec secured the victory as Li Quan Ly raised the level of her game and defeated Hollie Lau 2-1.
Quebec manager, Jean-Baptiste Bertrand was proud that his girls were able to close out a tight match. “Even though Ontario came in as the favourites, the girls started to get a little nervous when they realized that they could win. Good for them for their fighting spirit”.
In the other semi-final, Alberta upset British Columbia in a marathon 3 hour junior female team event match. Alberta advanced to the gold medal team match with a hard fought come from behind 3-2 victory.
British Columbia’s Shirley Fu defeated Alberta’s Yubo Zhang 3-1 in the first match. Roxana Pao tied it up for Alberta when she defeated Teri Zhou 3-1. British Columbia took a 2-1 lead after a 3-2 win in doubles after being down 2-1 in the match. The seesaw team match continued as Alberta squared it 2-2 when Jasmine Yao defeated Teri Zhou 3-1. Roxana Pao closed out this thrilling match with a 3-1 win over Michelle Liaw.
Alberta will now play Quebec for gold in the junior female team match Wednesday night.
