Quebec and Alberta Females Complete Upsets to Advance to the Gold Medal Match

Quebec upset the top seeds Ontario 3-1 in the Junior Female team event advancing to the gold medal team match.  The 4th seeded Quebec team got off to a slow start as Li Quan Ly lost to Jiawei Liu 3-1.  Quebec bounced back with Annie Coulombe winning a close match against Shannon Zhang 3-2.  The key to Quebec’s victory could very well have been the doubles match.  Quebec fought off 2 match points against Ontario in doubles and won 13-11 in the 5th and deciding match.  Quebec secured the victory as Li Quan Ly raised the level of her game and defeated Hollie Lau 2-1.

Quebec manager, Jean-Baptiste Bertrand was proud that his girls were able to close out a tight match.  “Even though Ontario came in as the favourites, the girls started to get a little nervous when they realized that they could win.  Good for them for their fighting spirit”.

In the other semi-final, Alberta upset British Columbia in a marathon 3 hour junior female team event match.  Alberta advanced to the gold medal team match with a hard fought come from behind 3-2 victory.

British Columbia’s Shirley Fu defeated Alberta’s Yubo Zhang 3-1 in the first match.  Roxana Pao tied it up for Alberta when she defeated Teri Zhou 3-1.  British Columbia took a 2-1 lead after a 3-2 win in doubles after being down 2-1 in the match.  The seesaw team match continued as Alberta squared it 2-2 when Jasmine Yao defeated Teri Zhou 3-1.  Roxana Pao closed out this thrilling match with a 3-1 win over Michelle Liaw.
