Saskatchewan’s Krista Funke Stops 25 Shots But Alberta Skates Away with Shutout Win

Alberta 3 – Saskatchewan 0

Dartmouth, N.S. – Saskatchewan netminder Krista Funke (Regina, Sask.) faced 28 shots in three periods during Canada Winter Games women’s hockey action Tuesday morning at the Sportsplex, but her teammates couldn’t find the net themselves and Alberta skated away with the 3-0 win.

Saskatchewan was able to hold off its western rivals at first, resulting in a scoreless first period, but forward Heather Kashman (Edmonton, Alta.) finally notched a marker into the back of Funke’s net three minutes into the second, with a little help from defenceman Kelly Murray (Medicine Hat, Alta.). Taylor Sakundiak (Calgary, Alta.) made it 2-0 for Alberta midway through the second.

Katy Josephs (Cochrane, Alta.) topped off the win at 3-1 just a minute into the third, and Saskatchewan’s continued struggle to get any shots off ended in a shutout victory for Alberta.

Saskatchewan next faces off against British Columbia in the Pool B morning game Wednesday, while Alberta takes on Ontario in their second game of the day Tuesday night in Dartmouth.
