Manitoba 9 – Prince Edward Island 1
Halifax, N.S. – Kristine Grenier (St. Leon, Man.) was a key ingredient in Manitoba’s 9-1 romping of Prince Edward Island, opening the scoring with a powerplay goal and adding two more in the second period for a hat trick Wednesday at the Metro Centre.
Grenier notched her first marker at 6:19 on a powerplay, which would light the fire under her skates for the remainder of the game.
Just three and a half minutes into the second, while shorthanded to boot, Grenier fed Shelby Bram (Ste.-Anne, Man.), who widened the gap to 2-0 in favour of Manitoba. Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Man.) followed up at 7:25 and Kayleigh Wiens (Winkler, Man.) made it 4-0 at 13:18 in the period.
Another powerplay was another opportunity for Grenier to giv’er, with Bram and Wiens both assisting her second goal of the game at 17:38 in the second. Less than a minute later, at 18:19 and at full strength, the power forward line combined to make it 6-0 and secure Grenier’s hat trick. And before the period was up, Natasha Kostenko (Fannystelle, Man.) added another on a Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man.) helper.
Despite the goose egg on the scoreboard, Prince Edward Island fought hard through all three periods of play, and was finally able to get on the game sheet midway through the third. They skated their hearts out but the Islanders just couldn’t keep up to the Manitobans, with both Jessica Carswell (Winnipeg, Man.) and Brooklyn Langlois (Steinbach, Man.) contributing to the 9-1 score for Manitoba before the buzzer sounded on the second game of the day.
