Ontario Blanks Newfoundland, Clarke and Frank Face 75 Shots

Newfoundland 0 – Ontario 6

Dartmouth, N.S. – It took a full period for the girls from Ontario to crack the scoreboard Wednesday afternoon at the Sportsplex, but once they did there was no turning back as they continued to fire rockets at the Newfoundland and Labrador net until the board read 6-0 in the end.

But the stars of the game could very well have been the two Newfoundland and Labrador goalies, who acted as bullseyes on behalf of their province. Abigail Clarke (Springdale, N.L.) and Ayla Frank (Labrador City, N.L.) combined to face a whopping 75 shots throughout the game, making 69 saves total.

Thirty-six of those shots came in the second period, resulting in four Ontario goals. Cayley Mercer (Exeter, Ont.) contributed two, including one on the powerplay, while Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ont.) and Kayla Raniwsky (Windsor, Ont.) both contributed singles.

After earning the 4-0 lead going into the third, Ontario put an impressive show on the ice, with Rebecca Kohler (St. Thomas, Ont.) adding an unassisted goal while her team was down a man midway through the period and Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont.) topping it off at 6-0 with a little help from Brittany Zuback (Thunder Bay, Ont.) on a powerplay, just a couple of minutes later.

The Newfoundland-Ontario matchup marked the last game at the Sportsplex before placement and quarterfinal games kick off Thursday.
