Daily Table Tennis Recap – Boys and Girls Singles

The afternoon and evening sessions on Thursday consisted of the girls’ and boys’ singles play downs to the semi-finals.

In the round of 16 of the girls’ singles event, in the top half of the draw Quebec’s Li Quan Ly defeated Yubo Zhang from Alberta by a score of 3-1 and Catherine Dauplaise from Quebec won 3-0 over Alberta’s Jasmine Yao.  In the lower half, British Columbia’s Michelle Liaw topped Hollie Lau from Ontario 3-1 and Annie Coulombe from Quebec defeated BC’s Teri Zhou 3-1. 

Next up was the quarter finals, the top seed Shirley Fu from British Columbia beat Quebec’s Li Quan Ly 3-1.  Ontario’s Jiawei Liu defeated Catherine Dauplaise from Quebec 3-0.  The next quarter saw Alberta’s Roxana Pao continue her good play and beat Michelle Liaw from BC 3-0.  In the final quarter, the second seed Shannon Zheng from Ontario was upset by Quebec’s Annie Coulombe with a score of 3-1.

The first semi-final sees the top seed Shirley Fu from BC take on the third seed Jiawei Liu from Ontario in one matchup.  The other semi-final pits the third seed from Alberta, Roxana Pao, against Annie Coulombe from Quebec.  These matches will take place Friday, February 25th at 9:00 a.m.

In the round of 16 of the boy’ singles event, in the top half of the draw British Columbia’s Mike Yue defeated Calvin Chong from Alberta by a score of 3-0 and Adrian Lee from BC won 3-0 over Manitoba’s William Lu.  In the lower half, British Columbia’s Jeremy Lau topped Michael Siemaszko from Quebec 3-0 and Tian-Terry Zhang from Manitoba defeated Quebec’s Vincent Rousseau-Edmond 3-1. 

Next up was the quarter finals, the top seed Yen-Chun Lu from Ontario beat BC’s Mike Yue 3-0. British Columbia’s Adrian Lee upset Mathieu Theriault from Quebec 3-0.  The next quarter saw Ontario’s Zexuan Wang beat Tian-Terry Zhang from Manitoba 3-0.  The most exciting match of the quarter finals was the final one with Ontario’s James Pintea, the third seed, going against British Columbia’s Jeremy Lau.   Lau jumped out to a surprising 2-0 lead only to see Pintea comeback to level the match at 2 sets a piece.  In the 5th and final set, Pintea was ahead by a score of 9-7 but Lau won the final 4 points to win the match 11-9.

The first semi-final see the top seed Yen-Chun Lu from Ontario take on the Adrian Lee from BC in one matchup.  The other semi-final pits the second seed from Ontario, Zexuan Wang, against Jeremy Lau from British Columbia.  These matches will take place Friday, February 25th at 11:00 a.m.
