Newfoundland and Labrador 1 – New Brunswick 3
Dartmouth, N.S. – 2011 Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team member Sarah MacDonnell (Quispamsis, N.B.) opened the scoring for New Brunswick in a 3-1 win over Newfoundland in regulation round action Friday morning at the Sportsplex.
MacDonnell got her stick on the puck during a scramble out front, tapping it past the goal line at 13:38 in the first, with assists from Anissa Gamble (Fredericton, N.B.) and Taylor Dale (Oromocto, N.B.).
Both sides fought hard for the puck, but the play repeatedly returned to the Newfoundland and Labrador zone, with New Brunswick putting goalies Abigail Clarke (Springdale, N.L. and Ayla Frank (Labrador City, N.L.) to the test. Clarke faced 19 shots in the first period alone, and the New Brunswickers fired off 14 shots in the second and 16 on Frank in the third.
The shots paid off in goals for New Brunswick, with Connor Garagan (Fredericton, N.B.) making it 2-0 for the Maritimers at just over three minutes into the second, and Janik Robichaud (Dieppe, N.B.) jumping on a power-play opportunity to top it off at 3-0 going into the intermission.
With a solid lead going into the third, all New Brunswick had to do was maintain it for another 20 minutes, and that’s exactly what they did, despite Jenelle Rogers (Marystown, N.L.) notching one for Newfoundland and Labrador midway through the period.
In total, the two Newfoundland netminders made 46 saves, but New Brunswick finished with the 3-1 win.
